We are set on the future. D-503, a spacecraft engineer, lives in One State, an urban nation built almost entirely of glass, aiding mass surveillance. The structure of the State is similar to a panopticon and life is managed scientifically in the style of F. W. Taylor. People march in step and are in uniform. There is no way to refer to people except by their given numbers. Society is strictly governed by logic or reason as the main justification for laws or the construction of society. The behavior of the individual is based on logic through formulas and equations outlined by the Single State.

We is a dystopian novel completed in 1921. It was written in response to the author's personal experiences with the Russian revolutions of 1905 and 1917, his life in the Newcastle suburb of Jesmond, and his work at the Tyne shipyards in nearby Wallsend during the First World War. It was on Tyneside that he saw the rationalization of work on a large scale.
