The Castle of Otranto

Horace Walpole 1764

This book is the first and most influential of the Gothic novels. First published under a pseudonym in 1764, The Castle of Otranto was intended to be a translation of an Italian story from the time of the Crusades. In it, Walpole attempted, as he stated in the preface to the second edition, "to mix the two types of romance: the ancient and the modern." It gives us a series of catastrophes, ghostly interventions, identity revelations and exciting contests. Full of invention, entertainment, terror and pathos, the novel was an immediate success and Walpole's favorite among his numerous works. - Back cover.
